A KILLING INSTINCT !

A branch centre was opened. That was in the middle of January. The last quarter of financial year. Almost seventy per cent of the total business is done during this period. And to do the work, one fresh recruit was posted. More hands were expected.

By the middle of February, an 'experienced' hand joined the office. She entered business figures in a register. To ensure accuracy of figures, she took the books to the other assistant. Together they did the job.

Came April when March was over. It was now time for the auditors to come and check the accuracy of business figures communicated to the office. Whilst they worked, auditors came across a mistake running to several thousands in business figures communicated. An adding mistake. More fondly called "a clerical mistake".

At the local head office, all the experts were happy that they could find out the mistake.

The 'actuary' among them was particularly happy. They all waited for the section officer of the branch centre to come.

He will come. He will be escorted to the divisional head. Divisional head will fire on him a few shots. Threaten him, he will be suspended if mistakes are repeated in future. The 'actuary' and co. were in great expectation.

Finally the section officer arrived. He met divisional head.

Instead of describing the problems in the branch office, telling him no supervisor or staff was available for work, and making many feeble attempts to justify the mistake, he merely took the responsibility of mistake upon himself.

Division head: "What happened?"

Section officer: "Sir, it is my mistake".

There ended everything. There was no further discussion.

Outside all heroes were waiting to know the outcome of the meeting. They did not know what transpired inside.

When all of them expected a shoot out inside the office of the divisional head and a cold-blooded murder of the section officer, they could not believe that this man would come unhurt, kicking and alive.

Lesson: Own responsibility for mistakes.
