There was a natural inducement for me to talk. Everything suited my requirements.
It was passport office. Passport officer was very kind and was telling me his experiences when he served different Indian embassies abroad.
He was a bit busy at the moment, he told me. Otherwise he would have himself attended the meeting I was to address.
It was one of our business trips to different offices. Wherever we had gone, there was enthusiastic response.
Sometimes I had very disappointing experiences too. Only the other day I went to meet a business prospect. As I was about to enter his cabin, he asked me to remove my shoes and then enter his room.
Then I didn't meet him.
Such experiences didn't deter us from our chosen path.
But here, at the passport office, everything appeared to be to my liking. All encouragements we received from the passport officer. The response from the staff members was also very good. I met some of them before the meeting.
.
Then I was taken to the meeting place. I was once again happy. There was a good gathering. All of them were seated in the chairs before I entered the hall. And I felt a little apologetic for being a little late.
The crowd appeared to be a disciplined lot. They were ready to listen to my speech.
I started off very well. Then I pressed the pedal. Got the right speed. And with the right mood and the right spirit I was cruising ahead. Told them stories. Cracked a few jokes. And the crowd seemed to appreciate them all.
.
This time, I thought, I was sure to fetch a good amount of business from this office. The advisor who had accompanied me had already received a promise of some business from his sister who was working there.
It was one of the most successful meetings I had ever conducted. I was in a jubilant mood.
I believe, I closed my speech also very well.
Then slowly, but in a confident manner, I assumed my seat.
.
Meeting was conducted during lunch time. I was sure the staff members of the passport office would now jump up from their seats and run to their respective departments to resume their work.
Then we were to meet them there. Explain the details once again, then "close business". We had our own plans.
.
But all those who attended the meeting continued to sit there. I could not understand.
Then slowly … and very slowly I was realizing that they were not getting up at all.
I was a puzzled man.
They sat there with the same posture.
Perhaps with the same smile too.
...
They continued to sit there. With tokens in their hands, they were waiting for their turn to come to meet department officials.
They were only visitors to the passport office and not, as I thought, staff members whom I had targetted to contact later at their seats for canvassing insurance business!
…
