Only two persons working in the local divisional office were wearing identity tags supplied by the office. One was the division head himself and the other was his deputy Ram Gopal. And none else.
It was an interesting question why only two persons were wearing these identity cards? Answer may be that others did not wear it. Or that the office administration failed to enforce discipline and compel the employees to wear it.
But the officers and managers appeared a more disciplined lot. They could have been easily compelled to wear these official tags. This was not done.
When only two persons were wearing it, there was some importance attached to them. The onlookers easily understood that these persons were very important managers in the organisation.
You can understand the division head becoming an important person. He had a dozen senior managers working under him. They were not asked to wear official identity cards.
But Ram Gopal alone thrived in the care of division head and he faithfully wore the decoration of the identity card.
They moved together. Perhaps they even dined together. Spent time in the company of each other.
Ram Gopal took care of the chief in all possible ways. They sat till late hours in the office. Often came out of office together.
One day Ram looked a little disturbed and sad. His chief was not keeping well. He was running temperature. He had no taste for any food. Persuasions were to no avail. Chief did not take any food at all.
Then the chief came out of his cabin. He was to go home. He moved towards the lift. Ram Gopal ran after him. "Sir, at least a cup of coffee, a piece of bread…." But his chief didn't say anything. He had a swollen throat.

Ram Gopal returned to his seat a sad man. His love for the division head was a genuine one. His weakness was managers in the cadre of division head and above. They were very powerful persons.
But those in the organisation with no power at all with them often misunderstood him.
Misunderstood him for that love and affection.
This is a bad, bad world. A cruel world indeed!
