A 'TALL' GENTLEMAN !

It is rather unfortunate that there are clashes of personalities in an organisation. The ideal situation would be one in which all the individuals in the organisation have harmonious relations with one another. Such a pleasant blend in organisation relations area generally works wonders.

When I received promotion and I was posted to the nearby Branch Office, I was a happy man. Immediately I met the officer in charge of administration in my new office to which I was posted. Unfortunately I did not enjoy very good relations with him but I was out to do something to improve the relations.

But I was facing a problem. An increment in the old scale of pay was due to me. So it was advisable to join the new post after drawing an increment in the last scale of pay.

I explained my problem. The officer in charge of administration heard me patiently. He also appreciated my problem. It was his view, anybody would try to protect such interests. Such an increment would mean a lot to an individual employee, he added.

My meeting with the administrative head ended on a pleasant note. He appreciated all my problems.

Next day I received a telephone call from the manager of the department where I worked. He asked me to meet him. When I met him, he asked me to go and join the new post immediately. He was in fact persuading me to take up new assignments. I agreed to do so the very next day.

Before I left his office, I had explained to him that I met the officer in charge of the branch office the other day. I also told him, I had his tacit permission to remain in the old post for a couple of weeks and report to the new office only afterwards. But my boss informed me the reason for his advice. He advised me again to join the new post immediately.

I wondered for a moment why he was giving me such an advice. Then I saw a letter my boss was holding in his hand. I could almost read the contents of this letter written by the very same person who had advised me to remain in the old post for some more time as I wanted. It was the same person who had agreed with me that anybody would try to protect such financial benefits.

What happened was that as soon as I left his office, he had written a confidential letter to the divisional head briefing him of details of what I had informed him. Divisional office was informed: The gentleman will not join the new post immediately. He is waiting for drawing an increment in the old post. So he may be advised to report to the branch office immediately !

I searched management books for the reason for this behaviour and got solace from the advice that one can improve relations with individuals at any point of time.
