THE DEATH OF A HERO !

SERVICE STORY : "My LIC days"

BY PG.POOCHERY

Prem Nath always claimed, he could do any work. And with ease too. He had inborn talents. Once he applied his mind, it would be got done.

So quite confidently he attended the training sessions for agency managers on human resources management. Classes were conducted by a visiting faculty. The faculty knew his job well. He did it with admirable ease. There was pin drop silence and the participants enjoyed the session. A commendable job indeed, they could not help saying.

.

That prompted Prem Nath, a hero well known in top management circles, to conduct the training session for one day.

In the beginning there was no problem. Slowly the mettle of the person conducting the class unfolded itself before the participants. They became restive. There was an awkward situation developing in the class. By evening things were out of control.

Prem Nath knew the situation was going out of control. He had no answers to the questions raised by the participants. Finally he abruptly brought the class to a close.

.

That day he was a disappointed man. He had the realisation that conducting a training class was altogether a different technique. And the techniques he was familiar with of moving about with top managers as an entertaining "yes" man had nothing to do with training in any case.

.

The question whether he made any usual claim before the division head that day was anybody's guess!

Lesson: Real work and pretensions are different subjects.
